A Marilyn Moment..

It’s surprising to me that there’s a lot of people out there who have not seen Marilyn Monroe’s movies and many of those people are not aware that she *sang* and very well, too. Does this surprise you also? If you have not seen her movies, you should at the very minimum watch Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, that is my favourite one.

I was watching a doco on her last night which played Diamonds are a girls best friend in full, and this song has been stuck in my head all day, in particular the very ending of it. The clip might seen familiar as Madonna made her own version of it but is nowhere near as sexy in that as Marilyn was in this.

Unfortunately the clips of this on youtube get taken down regularly so there’s no point putting a video – you’ll have to seek out the original movie. :)

A West Wing Update

Haven’t I been a good girl? I am up to episode 14 of season 2. Considering I started season two last Monday, I think that is actually pretty conservative of me. Just under 3 episodes a day but I am fairly sure I watched 4 on Monday. ;)

Now I am starting to get to episodes that I have seen before, which is a little strange.

The Other Half asked me yesterday if we could switch sides of the bed. We switched at the start of summer and he’s been sleeping badly ever since. I’m nice so I said yes, but halfway through the night he ended up back on my side, leaving me with no bedspace at all. We might have to look at the Feng Shui of that room or something. ;)

I’m gonna paint and watch a West Wing, be good ya’all.

West Wing Special ends!

So yesterday I finished season one, and am currently leaving myself on a cliffhanger. I don’t know how long I’ll be hanging from the cliff, I do know that if I had been watching this on TV and had to wait the six months inbetween seasons that is normally left here, I would surely be going insane waiting. They left us with people shooting at the President and staff..

Lucky for me, I have season two sitting right there on the table, and so anytime I choose to stop hanging on the cliff, I can just put the DVD in. ;)

However I noted that the specials at JB Hifi for the West Wing would end on January 15th, and when I checked the price elsewhere it put a bit of panic into me – the usual price is $114.99. That’s what they sell it for everywhere else. When I checked the JB website yesterday it said there were 17 hours left on the special which didn’t quite work out right. However we thought we could go back today and get seasons 3,4 and 5 at the special price.

Then I checked the website this morning, and panic set in when I found the price had gone back to $114.99 at 2:15am! I grabbed the phone and called them right away, asked them to check the price, they still had it as $32.95 so I asked them to put those aside for me. By the time we drove there due to summer nitwit holiday traffic, the price had gone up on their system, lucky I called. She had to over-ride the price..

And now, I can watch seasons 2,3,4 and 5 in my own time, peacefully, as I like to. This is kick ass.. :)

If you can get the seasons for $32-33, I recommend you do so without delay.

I also took back the broken juice jug, so it was quite a good trip, but it took a lot longer than usual due to idiots on the road who seem to have forgotten how to drive at all.

And now we’re debating whether or not to go snorkelling. The weather looks nice, so we might just go.

Morning Surprise

This morning I arrived at my desk to find this..

deskdols1

A closer view for you.

dolls

What on earth is on my desk, I hear you asking. Well, that’s Robbie Williams and Mark Owen. Yes, I have two Take That dolls. They have been an object of hilarious fun around the various houses I have lived in for some years now. Anytime I would have a party, a good friend of mine would find where the dolls were, and re-arrange them, pants around ankles, in some compromising position. Often I would not spot it until days later but whenever I did see it the end result would be me laughing until I couldn’t stand up anymore.

I don’t know why they are on my desk this morning, perhaps the other half was going through boxes or something, because I had not seen them since we left Adelaide.. But I did happen to get a couple of DVD’s when we went shopping the other day, one is Robbie Williams And Through It All which I listened to on Friday when I was making a cheesecake and it was really wonderful, and Take That The Ultimate Tour Live In Manchester which is their comeback performance on DVD. This I have not watched yet but it’s only a matter of time..

And yes, I know Take That are lame. I am well aware. But they were my Beatles, so shut the fuck up, all right? ;)

De-Lurk

Sephy mentioned this today. Apparently it’s de-lurking week, when you take the time and stop by the folks you read in your Google Reader or Bloglines, and say hi. So say hi today :) I’ll have about 117 Hi’s to say, I’ll try to do it by the end of the week. hehe

I managed to stop (for now) at 6 episodes. It’s like a drug, people. I’m hooked.

I spoke with Anna Falactic about The West Wing a little while ago. I do think it is easier for a non-American to watch, because there’s a big distance between me and your politics. I really don’t know what the difference between a Democrat and a Republican is over there. But I don’t think The West Wing is so much about American Politics as it is about the people involved in the process. And I really like the characters.

How can I stop?

One of the reasons I prefer to watch things on paytv if I can, is because they have set start and end times. Give me a DVD box set, say perhaps of an excellent show like The West Wing, and I might sit there and watch the pilot, and just one more, and just one more.. It’s good enough I could watch the entire 22 episode season in one sitting.

How did I miss watching this when it was on TV, again? Oh that’s right, the assholes at channel 9. ;) who played it whenever they felt like it. Well guess who’s in charge now? ;)

(I bought season two as well, just in case I needed it)

(and judging from current observations, I might, in a couple of days)

Free To Air TV.

You may be already aware of my dislike for free to air television, I’ve blogged about it before. I don’t even know how to put on the free to air channels in this house. I have Austar and I love it.

Recently there’s been one hour a day when I drop everything I am doing and sit down in front of the TV – I am watching The West Wing. This is another show that has been around for ages but I have never seen much of it thanks to Channel Nein and their constant love of fucking with the minds, hearts and scheduling timetables of their viewers. They loved to schedule a show at 10:30pm at night but they rarely played it at 10:30pm at night, sometimes the show would be 10, 20, or even a full 30 minutes late, and often it would not play at all, just to keep everyone surprised and on their toes.

Arena TV on Austar plays the show weekdays at 1am then repeats it on their +2 channel at 3am. So I really can’t miss it without making a big effort. This is what I need from a TV station. I need set times so I can commit to watching something. The free to air tv stations are often surprised when something does not rate, well how can it when nobody knows when it is supposed to be on? They need to commit so I can commit.

I am considering getting the whole series on DVD in fact, I am enjoying it so much. And it’s on special, the first series is just under $25. But the trouble with being given the power of the dvd box set is, I can’t stop at just one episode. I know this, I’ve done this with other series.

I have no idea where they are up to in the general scheme of west wing or even which season I am watching but at this stage that’s fine, I’m just enjoying the excellent acting and the very witty writing.

Devoted to Robbie..

I was watching a documentary the other day, it was about Robbie Williams, called “You are not alone” – now I have been a Robbie fan for many years, it’s been a long and winding journey, and I have seen other docos of him on tour before, some of you reading this may have as well – Nobody Someday was the really depressing one where I don’t think Robbie truly had any idea who he was but he was famous and singing and selling millions of albums. And surprisingly there will be people in the US reading this wondering who the fsck is this Robbie Williams guy? Many people there have *never* heard of him, can you believe that?

So I was watching this and they kept having screens pop up before each concert saying where it was and how many people, and most of them were 50,000 – 60,000 and even one with 90,000, and I remember he played Knebworth with something like 375,000+ people there. I was thinking, there’s really not that many performers who can expect such a crowd at their concerts. I can’t even think of many. Perhaps U2 and Madonna but after that I’m drawing a blank trying to think of performers who could expect that type of crowd.

Robbie is an amazing talent and we’re very lucky he didn’t crash and burn at a younger age as so many amazing talents do. He’s been through all the usual silly things people do, like drugs etc, but he’s managed to get clean and sober. Odd as it might sound, he’s struggled with low self esteem and depression and is only just now really beginning to value himself as highly as his fans do. Performing was not easy for him, it’s been a love hate thing, where he didn’t love it much, but now it seems he is starting to enjoy it as much as the crowd enjoys it. The one thing that eludes him is love. Sure, he can get sex anytime, but it’s not the same thing at all.

I feel sad for Robbie that so many people adore him but he can’t seem to find “the one”. I’ve been blessed in my life to find that person, and the experience of loving and being loved is about so much more than just the physical so I totally get what Robbie is missing. It’s about companionship and shared experience and working together towards goals and all kinds of stuff. The Other Half makes me laugh all the time, and I value that so much.

A pitiful excuse for a movie

I just flicked past the new version of Pride and Prejudice, and I thought I would watch it, to see if it was as bad as I thought it was. What a true horror it turned out to be. Terrible! I don’t like to be nasty but I have to be honest, what the heck were these people thinking, trying to remake something that was already done perfectly! And who would have chosen these idiotic actors to be in the main roles? Keira Knightley, the apparent darling saviour of British acting who has far too many teeth and there’s something just wrong about her! I cannot express how much I dislike her and the truth of it is, the real reason I cannot stand her is that she had the hide to take this role in the first place and ever since I knew she was playing Elizabeth Bennet I have been disliking her just on principle. There’s only one Elizabeth Bennet! And there’s only one version of it worth watching.

And the rest of the cast were equally silly to think they could pretend to be any of these characters at all. The whole production was a terrible idea. And there’s nobody who can play Mr Darcy as well as Colin Firth did. Even Dame Judi Dench was a disappointment and proof that nobody could play these characters as well as the actors in the mini-series, because her performance was a carbon copy of the original Lady Catherine. And between Lizzy and Mr Darcy there existed not a single spark of chemistry at all.

Assorted things..

I just squished a spider with a coffee mug. Well, it was in my house and the rules are clear – stay outside I won’t kill you. Venture in here and I am gonna dead you if I see you.

Interesting to note that a little visitor slash possible blog stalker who once tried to censor me has popped by again. Might I recommend you do something a little more useful than reading my blog? You’re not welcome here. Just so you know. Okie dokie then?

When I was growing up there was two movies my Mother refused to allow me to watch. Silence of the lambs (which I have seen and now can’t work out why she wouldn’t let me see it) and The Blue Lagoon – which starred one of my favourite actors, Christopher Atkins. I finally managed to see the whole thing this morning on one of the movie channels and I get why she wouldn’t let me see that – loads of nudity! OMG. There’s no way you could make this movie today, there would be too much outcry. It’s a really lovely movie though, I enjoyed it. And not just because of all the *male* nudity either.. ;)

I must do another movie review soon, just trying to decide which one it should be.. :)

The other half has had a big couple of days at work, which may mean a nice trip to JB Hifi soon, maybe.. ;)
