Shakespeare In Love

Today, we’re going to be talking about William Shakespeare. Yeah, I know some of you look forward to this about as much as you look forward to root canal work.

– A quote from Dead Poets Society

At some point during the childhood or teenage years of many humans, they are taught to fear Shakespeare. They are taught that it is difficult to study and that they will hate it. When the time comes to study it in school unless they have an amazing teacher they probably will hate it.

If they are lucky as I was, their school has an excellent drama department with a drama teacher who inspires their students and loves Shakespeare. That teacher will teach them to love words and to savor Shakespeare like they would savor good Lindt chocolate.

But now, they might be lucky enough – at an appropriate age because this movie does contain some quite saucy love scenes – to have a teacher or a parent who shows them the movie Shakespeare In Love.

Many of the works of William Shakespeare had been recreated on both television and in movies but this movie is unique because it is a fictional version of the life of Shakespeare himself. Fortunately when they did decide to tackle it they made it a comedy. What a comedy it is, too! If you have not seen it, you must. So why do I love this movie so much? I could sit here and write reasons why all day long, but here are the top 5.

5. The costumes.

Incredible!

Costumes

4. Dame Judi Dench.

If she is in a movie you know it is going to be incredible. The costumes she had to wear were huge and heavy as you can see above. Her portrayal of Elizabeth was exactly perfect.

Dame Judi Dench

3. Colin Firth.

Everyone loves Colin Firth, right? Well I do anyway. I think this is one of his best performances. You can tell he is enjoying it. Usually he plays the opposite kinds of roles to this.

Colin Firth

2. Gwyneth Paltrow.

She pulls off quite an acting feat in this movie. I don’t want to spoil the story in case you haven’t seen it but let me put it this way. In the movie she plays more than one character. One of the characters has long hair extensions. The other character could not be played with the long hair extensions. She spent a lot of time in the hairdressing chair and on average it was 2.5 hours each time they had to put the extensions in. And gentlemen, you get to see her half naked. She said in the commentary track that she wanted the love scenes to be realistic rather than being worried about covering herself up. On top of all that, she’s speaking in an English accent.

Gwyneth Paltrow

1. Joseph Fiennes.

He is the brother of Raiph Fiennes – and note that is spelt Raiph and pronounced Rafe and not Ralph – who is a very well known actor. Joseph is amazing. I could not imagine anyone else playing this role. He has the most gorgeous big brown eyes. He was also in another of my favourite movies – Elizabeth with Cate Blanchett.

Joseph Fiennes

Other Good Things

Geoffrey Rush is in the movie and his character is hilarious. Normally I can’t stand Ben Affleck but he appears in this movie and I actually quite liked him in this role. The DVD version I have includes two commentary tracks, one with the director and one with the cast and crew. Both are very interesting.

In Conclusion –

This movie deserves to be seen and savored. It deserves a home on your DVD shelf. Excellent acting, gorgeous and stunning and sparkly costumes and plenty of Shakespeare. It is the only movie that I own both on video and DVD. It was also the first movie The Other Half and I ever saw together. Now The Other Half is not into most of the same kinds of movies that I am – he is more an action or science fiction fan. He loved this movie as much as I did. It’s not just a chick flick. ;)

The Light At The End Of The Tunnel

This week has been the hardest week for me. Once we got everything moved in here, I found myself just wanting to space out for a bit, watch a movie, have a rest. I’d been working so hard for so long without one day off. This was made even worse by the fact that two appliances we had ordered – our new Miele dishwasher and condenser dryer – had not arrived.

I had a little benchtop dishwasher which is half the size of a normal one, and I was trying to keep on top of the dishes as well as trying to clean the dishes unpacked from very inky newspaper. Note to ya’all – newspaper is not good for packing these days due to the amount of full color ads. My dishes were utterly filthy when I unpacked them. What was once white was now.. multicolored and ink stained. One advertiser had full page orange ads, which gave me fully orange plates!

I was washing all the clothes – then lugging them all downstairs to be dried in our old 4.5kg sensor dryer – then lugging them back upstairs to hang them up and iron them. The amount of lint that thing creates is incredible. We had to put it in the garage at the old house because there was no vent in the laundry. When we moved here we knew there was no vent so we made the decision to finally buy what we’d wanted for so long – a condenser dryer.

The new condenser dryer does not create anywhere near as much lint, and the even better news? You can reclaim the water from your washed clothes to water the plants. My first load in there which has just finished drying gave me back 2 litres of water, which I put on the lemon tree. That load had been washed at the high spin speed because when I put it on we didn’t know the appliances had arrived. On Saturday I’ll put some pics online of the appliances and reclaiming the water for those interested.

What all this has meant is, I have been so busy doing chores, unpacking, cooking, washing, drying, dishwashing, ironing and spacing out.. the amount of exercise I have been getting each day, even on the two days I took a bit of a break and watched a movie, is a lot more than I am used to. I have been falling into bed by 11:30pm and waking up every morning just before 7am. I am sleeping much better.

This week I saw The Sentinel with Michael Douglas and Kiefer Sutherland – it was wonderful, I really enjoyed it. I bought In The Line Of Fire with Clint Eastwood because it was less than $10 and it was always a great movie – and it has a commentary track, so I was sold. Both of these were movies which involved the Secret Service and the President.

I also saw The Lake House with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock which I spent half the movie trying to work out where it was going and when it finally dawned on me it hit me like a tonne of bricks – warning ladies, have your tissues handy! And Keanu looks HOT. And acts like someone with more than half a brain, which is hugely attractive for a change!

Now that the appliances have arrived, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I will be able to finish all the chores over the next 3 days or so, and then I can get started on my daily beach walks. We’re working on a menu plan, and I have cooked dinner every night this week. Plus I made a cake! ;)

I am so ready to fall into bed tonight because I helped the other half carry those two really heavy appliances up the stairs, plus I had a full day of chores and grocery shopping on top of that!

Tomorrow I will be starting a new feature here on the blog, so look forward to that. ;)

Baiter baited!

It is no coincidence that we have a channel 419 on Austar. It is actually the World Movies channel. And it keeps baiting me into watching these movies which if they were in english, I wouldn’t touch with a barge pole. I

Some weeks ago I was flicking around and found I had to enter in a code to see the world movies channel due to an R rated film, which I have to say was one of the worst pieces of cinema I have ever had the misfortune to sit through. It involved a woman erotically licking peaches. There were four stories, I never made it through the first one, it was such shyte. It seems that you can make a movie about virtually anything as long as you throw a full frontal naked woman into it.

I don’t normally watch this channel at all, but late last night there was very little on tv, I was down in the other half’s room and it was too far to walk to get the next west wing dvd, and the description of the movie sounded interesting.

The movie was actually quite friendly, quirky, I liked it and I was surprised how much of the language I actually knew. Maybe I paid better attention in primary school than I thought. But they really picked the right thing to bait me, because much of the story was about the shoes this woman was wearing. I like shoes. I don’t like wearing them but I like to look at them on other people.

I’m sure you have seen this by now.

Some months ago the other half and I drove to Sydney. Halfway there they had an ad for a Harry Potter film, and I said to the other half – that poor kid, he’s going to be Harry Potter for life, he’ll never be able to get past that. And someone should wax that kid’s eyebrows.

Well, perhaps I was wrong. Here’s the Harry Potter we all know –

danielradcliffe

And here is Daniel Radcliffe, formerly known as Harry Potter, in a new play where he gets *naked*.

There’s something so not right about this but I can’t put my finger on exactly why.. ;)

A Marilyn Moment..

It’s surprising to me that there’s a lot of people out there who have not seen Marilyn Monroe’s movies and many of those people are not aware that she *sang* and very well, too. Does this surprise you also? If you have not seen her movies, you should at the very minimum watch Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, that is my favourite one.

I was watching a doco on her last night which played Diamonds are a girls best friend in full, and this song has been stuck in my head all day, in particular the very ending of it. The clip might seen familiar as Madonna made her own version of it but is nowhere near as sexy in that as Marilyn was in this.

Unfortunately the clips of this on youtube get taken down regularly so there’s no point putting a video – you’ll have to seek out the original movie. :)

A pitiful excuse for a movie

I just flicked past the new version of Pride and Prejudice, and I thought I would watch it, to see if it was as bad as I thought it was. What a true horror it turned out to be. Terrible! I don’t like to be nasty but I have to be honest, what the heck were these people thinking, trying to remake something that was already done perfectly! And who would have chosen these idiotic actors to be in the main roles? Keira Knightley, the apparent darling saviour of British acting who has far too many teeth and there’s something just wrong about her! I cannot express how much I dislike her and the truth of it is, the real reason I cannot stand her is that she had the hide to take this role in the first place and ever since I knew she was playing Elizabeth Bennet I have been disliking her just on principle. There’s only one Elizabeth Bennet! And there’s only one version of it worth watching.

And the rest of the cast were equally silly to think they could pretend to be any of these characters at all. The whole production was a terrible idea. And there’s nobody who can play Mr Darcy as well as Colin Firth did. Even Dame Judi Dench was a disappointment and proof that nobody could play these characters as well as the actors in the mini-series, because her performance was a carbon copy of the original Lady Catherine. And between Lizzy and Mr Darcy there existed not a single spark of chemistry at all.

Assorted things..

I just squished a spider with a coffee mug. Well, it was in my house and the rules are clear – stay outside I won’t kill you. Venture in here and I am gonna dead you if I see you.

Interesting to note that a little visitor slash possible blog stalker who once tried to censor me has popped by again. Might I recommend you do something a little more useful than reading my blog? You’re not welcome here. Just so you know. Okie dokie then?

When I was growing up there was two movies my Mother refused to allow me to watch. Silence of the lambs (which I have seen and now can’t work out why she wouldn’t let me see it) and The Blue Lagoon – which starred one of my favourite actors, Christopher Atkins. I finally managed to see the whole thing this morning on one of the movie channels and I get why she wouldn’t let me see that – loads of nudity! OMG. There’s no way you could make this movie today, there would be too much outcry. It’s a really lovely movie though, I enjoyed it. And not just because of all the *male* nudity either.. ;)

I must do another movie review soon, just trying to decide which one it should be.. :)

The other half has had a big couple of days at work, which may mean a nice trip to JB Hifi soon, maybe.. ;)

Potential teenage suicide..

I managed to catch the end of the sisterhood of the travelling pants today. It’s funny, you know? I never would have sat down to watch this movie at all. We got the movie channels a couple of months ago and one night I was flicking around and I found it, and I got sucked into it, basically. However with 45 minutes to go, the little reminder thing on the paytv box popped up, I had another show I really wanted to watch, and I wasn’t sucked in enough to stick with the movie.

However when I left the movie, things seemed to be going relatively well, and the girls seemed to perhaps be heading towards potentially happy endings. Which when you’re a teenager, you tend to like that kind of thing. At least I know I did.

What movies did I watch when I was a teenager that didn’t have happy endings? I can’t really remember too many. I know Dead Poets Society was one of my favourites with a sad ending. But it was a superbly acted movie with a serious message which was necessary and much needed – and still is today, I think. Let’s watch it again and see, people? ;) But in all my memories, I really cannot think of a movie that came anywhere near as gut wrenchingly depressing as this sisterhood movie turned out to be.

The little girl who had leukaemia died. In my opinion an alternative? They could have left it as a will she/won’t she, do the pants really have magic enough to save her type of situation. At least leave the kid with the *chance*? But no, let’s just kill her off, and make it as depressing as we can, shall we?

Two girls hooked up with tastefully hunky men. Although the movie does not state for sure, it is left fairly obvious that one of them shagged her man and was left empty by the experience instead of it being anything like she had dreamed of. The other one left hers in Greece, without even any hope of a future meeting or a long distance relationship of any sort. The message? Love hurts, it never works out, and sex is NOT in any way something decent or fulfilling. Yeah I think that is a GREAT message to send to the young kids of today.

Another girl whose father (said father played by Bradley Whitford, you’d know him from The West Wing) had left her mother and moved to another town, she goes to visit him and finds he has an entirely new replacement family which he hasn’t told her anything about at all. And they’re getting married. Things don’t work out so well, she leaves, when all the girls get back together they talk the girl into taking a road trip to the wedding, and then get the girl to wear the *jeans* to the wedding. Yeah, good idea. A great fashion look. But apparently it makes all the difference because her father pulls her up onto the podium so they can all get married together. WHAT THE FUCK? The last conversation she had with her father she was all – you abandoned me for this new family – and what, did that all just vanish? She suddenly didn’t care about any of that? They didn’t have issues that needed resolving before dragging her up there?

And the movie ends with all the girls sitting at a table under the wedding gazebo being all girly girl friendly with each other and promising they would be friends forever, or some such bullshit.

What the heck are we offering the kids of today? Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and movies which make you want to grab a razor blade and slit your wrists?

The show that really taught me some serious facts of life was Degrassi – ya’all remember it I’m sure, if you’re from Australia. It was a Canadian show and we all loved it. What we loved about it was, it was *realistic*. The storylines were not some fake thing made up by Hollywood writers, and they did not all have happy endings either, but it was much less depressing – it was more – make good choices, if you make bad choices there will be consequences you might not like.

I don’t know what these people who made this movie were thinking, but if you are a parent, don’t let your kids see this movie. It’s not right at all. Go buy them the box set of Degrassi instead.. :)

Yay! It’s here!

Today’s a really cool day. I was just watching Bed Of Roses (and what a great chick flick that is too, too much perfection!) and the doorbell rings and right away I know it’s the other half cos it doesn’t just ring once, it rings like 20 times like we do.. :) and he says he has a surprise, and opens the garage and backs in my parents car, and I figure out fairly quickly that it has finally got here..

surprise

I’ve smudged out his name because he does have an extremely unique name. ;) For the newer readers to the blog, my other half won a competition to go to Thailand and make his own washing machine in the factory there, and then he boxed it up, and it’s been on a boat ever since, and now it is here..

And I still have not managed to look at the photos from his trip yet. I suppose I should get around to it, right? ;)

This movie may come to you as a surprise..

The other half and I don’t have the same taste in movies at all. I like to watch movies with him from time to time but it’s a big exercise in compromise for the most part. I have no desire to spend a couple of hours watching cartoons (ie anime) and most of the stuff he likes I just can’t stand. And vice versa. So tonight it came to me as a great surprise that a movie he chose turned out to be utterly fantastic – Gattaca.

I have never understood all the fuss about Jude Law, but I do now. Ethan Hawke was as always incredible. Uma Thurman was gorgeous and tall. The surprise for me was Loren Dean – who I recognised from somewhere but could not put my finger on where from – he played John Aaron in Apollo 13, one of my favourite movies. If you have not seen Gattaca, make sure to check it out. I really enjoyed it.

Oh, you remember the 10 things about me we did a while back? Sephy, I’m Not Craig, Ms Batville, Watershedd (with two d’s) and me all did it, and now Meva who has just returned from two weeks of snorkelling has done it too.. :)

If you are reading this and you are not one of the above named people, consider yourself obliged to post 10 things we don’t know about you, and then say you did it in the comments here. I’ll link to you. And for the NaBloPoMo people, this gives you something to blog about tomorrow/today!
