Sunday Selections Week 31

You may recall Australian Airlines which existed for a short four years in Australia – between 2002 and 2006. This is what the aircraft looked like.

Would you like to join in? The rules are very simple:-

Weekly Wrap Up –

I’m only going to give you one link this week. I’m sure you’ve seen the news about the flaperon possibly from MH370 washing up on Reunion Island. If you want to keep up to date on happenings, my advice would be this thread on PPRuNe – Flaperon washes up on Reunion Island for all the latest info plus discussion from actual pilots.

Snoskred On Holidays

For the next two weeks, Snoskred will be taking a holiday from the blog. My Aunt and Uncle will be here visiting, The Other Half has holidays booked, and my intention is to put the laptop away for most of, if not the entire, time.

You won’t see comments from me on your blogs while I’m on holidays. It is not you, it is me. ;) I just need a break. I’m quite determined and committed to taking this time off!

I probably will not be keeping up with my blog reading, meaning I will return to a lot of posts to read. So you might get comments on older posts from me mid August.

I’ve got photo posts scheduled for the next two weeks, but I am giving you a holiday as well – I’ll be turning off the comments on my holiday photo posts.. today will be the last post you can comment on until I return.

I’ll be back on Monday the 17th of August. :)

Welcome to my feedreader, bloggers.

There are 31 of you. In my internet travels I found my way to your blog, often because I read a blogger who linked to you. I liked your blog a lot. While there, I probably read back about 40+ posts or so. Then I added you to my feedreader.

Most of you will know what a feedreader is, but in case you do not, click here for info. The quick run down – it is an awesome program which collects new articles that bloggers post. So when you post something new, I get a copy, and if I have the time and something to say, I will click through and comment.

If you want to get a feed reader, I highly recommend Inoreader, which I have been using a lot lately. I wrote this post – how to get started with Inoreader.

At the end of 6 months or so, if I am still loving your blog as much as I did when I added you to my feed reader, I will add you to my permanent blogroll. YAY!

Sunday Selections Week 30

australian2

Last week I posted some photos of Yananyi Dreaming, a special Qantas livery on a 737. This week I have the two special 747s together for you, taken together in 2004 at Sydney Airport.

australian5

The blue art-plane was known as Nalanji Dreaming.

australian6

The red art-plane was known as Wunala Dreaming.

You can read more about these special flying artworks here.

Would you like to join in? The rules are very simple:-

Weekly Wrap Up –

On the home front, there is good news and not so good news. GOOD: We now have two areas of concrete laid. BAD: The trouble is, there is one area missing, and it is the most important one, the part that connects the driveway to the new concrete. Our cars will be sitting out the front for at least another week. :(

On Wednesday I went with a friend to watch Take That Live. These guys always put on a fantastic show but I usually have to wait for the DVDs to come out. It was amazing seeing the concert on the big screen. There were, admittedly, only 6 of us there, so chances are it will never happen again.

You can find unusual upcoming screenings via the Advanced Tickets page, and also, the Alternate Cinema page.

If you like Pink Floyd, this one might be for you.

Posts Snoskred Enjoyed –

Before posting the links, I will like to say this. Bloggers, there is a way to make your post titles in capitals without actually having to use capitals via CSS. It is called uppercase. I’ve been re-writing post titles to remove the caps, and I’m done doing that. I’m just going to post them in caps from now on.. no offence meant!

Perhaps I can convince Sephy to create a how to guide for that one day. I talked him into writing a how to guide for Tunnelbear, which people might be interested to read. You know when you go to a US or UK website and it says “this content is not available in your region”? Tunnelbear is your solution. Licensing agreements, piffle to you!

How To: Use TunnelBear – I use Tunnelbear regularly to watch everything from tv trailers to video clips.

Last Words: Six Things to Say When Someone is Dying – While I am hopeful I won’t have to be saying these things anytime soon, I do want to point out that saying them now to the person(s) you love is worth doing. I wrote about being that person and saying those important things to people.

The Best Whole Grain Breakfast Recipes on the Interweb (Round Up) – Need more grains in your diet? You should be able to find something here.

Donald Trump Is The World’s Greatest Troll – and it isn’t just the hairstyle that gives it away.. :) Seriously Donald, quit hanging onto those hair scraps, man up, shave whatever that is, OFF!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GEORGE! NEW PHOTO RELEASED AND TWO YEARS OF GEORGE’S BEST EXPRESSIONS – This is a beautiful post well worth clicking through to read.. :)

MORE MUSHROOM LOVE – MY SPEEDY, SIMPLE MUSHROOM PATE – I have been cooking mushrooms for lunch every single day this week and I think maybe this mushroom pate might be worth a try. It would spice up my cheese and crackers nicely, I think.

Roasted Asparagus and Mushroom Carbonara – this sounds incredible!

Here On The Blog –

Last week I showed you Yananyi Dreaming in Sunday Selections Week 29 – I spoke about how Your Religious Beliefs Are Yours. – and told you about some shows I have been revisiting in Television Tuesday – Old Shows.

You saw my sparkly kitty WW – Sparkly Kitty – and on Friday I said Blogger, Don’t You Lose My Comment!

Blog Spotlight –

Each week, I will link to a blog I am reading to shine a spotlight on it and tell you what I like about it. This week –

Coming Up –

I’m going to tell you about the capers I might plan, if I were more criminally minded. Lucky for the world, I’m not so inclined.. :) Plus, we’re almost at the end of July, so New Feeds July will be posting on Friday.

qantas1

This week I am posting a couple of photos taken in February 2003 of Yananyi Dreaming. You can read more about the flying art aircraft of Qantas here – Flying Art.

Weekly Wrap Up –

On Friday this week, I received the best SMS ever from my Aunt. I’m going to share it with you, plus my reply.

Hi Sparkles just wanted to let you know scans I had came back showing NO cancer so I’m in remission according to my doctor.

FYI Sparkles is my nickname because I am usually wearing at least one sparkly item. :) My reply went like this –

What a happy moment! Yay. There are no suitable words for this news. I may have to get out the thesaurus.

I’m taking a week off from the weekly wrap up this week. I did not feel very inspired to save links this week. I’ve had yet another cold and I am losing my patience for pretty much everything at this point. :) Though that SMS cheered me up enormously.

My Aunt is coming up to visit in early August, so I’m wondering whether I should put together a celebration package or just put together a gift bag for when she gets here. I am leaning towards the latter because my last package took over a month to arrive. I posted it the same day I posted a package to Sephyroth and he received his within a week, and his package went from Australia to the USA!

Weekly Wrap Up –

One of the scam posts I did is a gift that keeps on giving.. there have been thousands of views to that post since I first posted it. Some days nobody posts a comment on it, and then some days there are 5-10 new comments on the post. Some days maybe 20-30 people view it, and some days 200-300 people view it, and one day this week over 800 people viewed it..

Here at home, we are all set for concreting to happen, however the weather being so cold they have put the job off because concrete will crack if it gets too cold while it is setting. This means the cars are stuck out the front of the house which is not a comfortable situation for me.

Weekly Wrap Up –

This week has been an interesting one in Snoskredland. We discovered that we did not have a sewer leak or a pipe leak but we likely had found a natural spring given the lack of rain here just lately..

I went on a shopping trip with the parents during which I FOUND MY KNIT at Millers and it is absolutely stunning! I did not see it on the website. I will show it to you this Wednesday.

Then in the latter half of the week, the contractors arrived to do preparations for our new driveway, and our cars have had to be parked out the front since Thursday which meant I cleaned out every single item, even from the gloveboxes, because we have a bit of a problem with car window smashing around here.

5 Lessons I Learned From Looking Back

img_6123

Recently I went back through all the posts I’d written here on the blog. While looking back I learned some lessons which might be useful to other people, so I thought I would share them with you. :)

5. About Categories –

I wrote a little about this in an earlier post – Sephyroth Is A Genius – I think the most important lesson I learned was to come up with a decent plan for categories and then stick to it.

4. About Better Post Titles –

Before I learned anything about blogging, my post titles were in general pretty terrible. Sometimes they did not relate in any way to the text of the post. Here are a few examples of crappy titles I once used – Quick BlogYeah I knowEek!W00t!

How To Fix This –

Write better titles. Read some articles about writing better titles. In general my titles now tend to give people an idea of what the post itself is about, but I still think I could do better. :)

3. About Posting Images –

Sometimes images that I had posted were no longer available. Many of these were my *own* images which Blogger had deleted as a surprise to me. They actually do that fairly regularly. I did not delete any Picasa albums, so I have no idea why my images vanished, and I can’t be bothered trying to figure it out. If a post relied heavily on pictures that were now missing, I had to make the difficult decision to delete those posts and move on.

Also, with some images I had done a bit of a bad thing – back in the days before I knew better – I had “hot linked” to images on other sites. I had no idea that was not the done thing. I know better now. :)

How To Fix This –

Now I keep all my blog images on my own blog, plus I put them into a folder called “posted” when I have posted them, so I could easily find them again if I needed to. Plus, Absolutely No Hotlinking – eg posting an image that resides on another site here on my site.

2. About Posting Links –

Blogs disappear. They move without leaving a forwarding address. News articles disappear, too. I had based several blog posts on a post from another blogger or a news article without including enough information – and when the post or news article disappeared, my post no longer made any sense. Those posts had to be deleted.

Take this post – I want to work here – as an example. If the post I had linked to no longer existed, how much sense would that post make? Zero.

How To Fix This –

When I write posts in the future, I need to make sure my posts can stand alone – if I am linking to another post or a news article, it might be an idea to take a screenshot of the article and include that in the post or save a copy of the article somewhere, in case the original disappears. Links should play a supporting role, not be the star of a post I write.

1. About Posting Videos –

I had to delete about 40 posts where I had posted just a title and a youtube video. In almost all of these cases, the title was something like “I Love This Video” or “This Video Is Awesome” and nowhere in the post did I happen to mention the NAME of the video or the artist. When I went to play the video, I got the youtube message “This video has been removed due to X, Y or Z reason”.

Without a name or an artist or any idea what video I might have posted, it was impossible to fix these posts to resemble the original post. They had to be deleted.

How To Fix This –

Going forward, I will always make sure to include the video name and artist when posting videos.
