The Flagon

20171103_122636

As much as I love my Beerenberg tomato sauce, I do kinda resent having to pay $4.45 for a 300ml bottle which last us maybe a week in sausage roll season.

And because we have chosen to take sausage roll season into the summer this year with our meatballs in a tin, which is essentially sausage rolls without the filo pastry, we have been consuming quite a lot of sauce.

When a family member travels to RADelaide (yes that is what those of us who lived there but left do call it, because we do still love it) we make one small request.

Can you visit the Beerenberg factory shop and pick us up a flagon of tomato sauce? Pretty please?

And our wishes were granted.

300ml VS 2 litres. This should last us a short time! ;) I have no idea how much the flagon was as I did not buy it. But you better believe we will enjoy every single drop of it. If you have not tried Beerenberg tomato sauce, I highly recommend it. I think what makes it so incredible on the tastebuds is the apple they add.

They make a large range of products and I have never had a bad one yet. The jams are lovely, too. The one thing I do not love are the labels with random names on them. At least they changed the tomato sauce one back to a normal one.

Snoskred On Holiday

magnificent

The Other Half just finished his holidays. He spent much of that time building a fabulous pergola which we are enjoying far too much. This is only half of it! It is almost impossible to get a good photo of it, but I will spend some time trying over the next week or so.

kitteholliday

Sitting out there with the chooks and kitties is my idea of perfection. I’ve not taken a holiday from the blog for a little while now, and I would like to get some posts written ahead of time and scheduled, so I’m going to take a time out. I’ll take the laptop out the back and enjoy the magnificent space we have built. Not sure if it will be one or two weeks, I will see how I go. ;)

Only In Australia

twinkleroo

Seen today at Bunnings, which is a local hardware store.

Due to our lack of rain, recently the local kangaroos have been heading into the more populated areas in order to eat peoples lawns. :) I wonder how they would react to these “twinkle” kangaroos if they met them on a lawn somewhere? Would they recognise it as another kangaroo?

Narooma Time

narooma1

When we drove down the coast to pick up our new girls we realised we have not been doing many day trips in this direction, so we chose to remedy that on Saturday with a drive to Narooma. They have a gorgeous inlet there, it is incredibly pretty.

rockwall1

I’d chosen us a place to have lunch on our previous trip however we ate pies from Haydens Pies instead, so no lunch was required. We drove past the place I picked and it was packed full of people, virtually bursting at the seams. So this time we decided to make that our destination.

fishfood

Unfortunately it did not turn out especially well – the best we could say was average. Just ok. I’m not going to name the place as I would not recommend it and I would not go back. The worst part was that they had all the doors and windows open, it was windy and cold even inside the cafe. That might have impacted on how we felt about the food. Maybe on a hot summer day when there is no wind, this might be the Place To Be. I will show you our food photos. :)

burger1

I chose flathead fillets and chips, The Other Half chose a burger. You know it is bad when I leave half a large cup of Chai Latte behind. To be fair, the Chai Latte at Heatherbrae pies is amazing and it takes a LOT to beat it, but this would have been the worst coffee I have had in a few years.

rockwall2

We made a better choice of heading to the boardwalk for a stroll – that is probably going to be a post on its own. On arrival in the carpark we spotted this large rock wall and chose to walk out there. We were glad we did as there were seals just chilling and hanging out in the channel.

seals1

It was very windy, though. I was glad that I keep extra jackets and a beanie in the car for such situations. There were huge granite rocks and we saw the coolest thing. There were surfers in the water and I saw something odd shaped swimming under the surface, just a dark blob. The water here is so crystal clear it is unbelievable. I thought it might be a stingray or a large fish.

seal1

It turned out to be a seal, who was checking out the surfers. The seal swam right up to them, and then did a little surfing. As if to say no, here is how you do it. You don’t need that board!

indodirect

On the way home we stopped in Mogo for a stroll around the shops there. One of them – IndoDirect – had a stunning black rainbow vase for $125. I loved it but I would need a whole new house if I bought it. That needs to be the centrepiece of a formal entry way with white tiles, white walls, white everything. It was so beautiful I did not take a photo of it, for fear that I might talk myself into going back and buying it. I did take a photo of this elephant which my Mother would love, but it was a bit up money at $159.

booderee

On the way home we made a diversion through Booderee National Park, to see if the trail we want to walk is open yet. Sadly it is not. Both sides of the road here are usually green, so you can see how much of an impact the fire had. If it had been a natural fire started by a thunderstorm, it would not be so upsetting to see this. But this fire was deliberately lit, they believe.

A Quick Fashion Post

viviana

Recently I was looking through one of the fashion websites and one of the new dress arrivals at Noni B made me gasp out loud. This is the Viviana, it is currently nearly $127 and that is 25% off, which is not something I am likely to pay. But that store regularly does $50 dresses so next time I am there, I will try it on and establish what size I need, and whether I actually like it on, and if I like the material.

zteeshirtme2

I was in Target recently – well not the real Target, because we have “country” Target here, which is like removing all the awesomeness of Target and leaving.. well, whatever is left. I am not a fan.

zteeshirtme1

Maybe 20 years ago I bought some t-shirts at Target which I still have and wear to this day. I thought I saw something similar on a recent drive by the store but it turned out they were a thin material and Not Great cut. They had just got the Christmas t-shirts in, and it was yet another time where the plus size option was far better than the option for not plus size.

two

The smallest size they had was 16, it would have been far too big for me. :( When you look at these two side by side, you will notice the sleeves are also shorter on the “normal” sized option. I prefer the design on the plus size option, too. When you write Merry Christmas on something, there is a smaller chance you can wear it at other times of the year, whereas the plus option you could likely wear that anytime and nobody would really notice it is a Christmas shirt.

mr19911

I have been hunting for weeks to find t-shirts that I like and epically failing. What do I want? Material that is not see through, too clingy, too thin. I want a decent sleeve length. I would prefer that it goes to the elbow. I would like cotton if possible. I already have quite a few super short sleeve tops and they are fine for hot summer days, but on cooler days I would like a bit more sleeve. Something with a gorgeous design. I like skulls, I like koi fish, I like a foil print, a metallic accent or stud embellishment, I love sequins, probably what I really need is a trip to Hawaii because I found plenty of all of that there!

ghandashort

Ghanda make a great range of long sleeve crew neck tees – perfect material, great designs, quite a bit of tie dye which I love, but the short sleeve tees are just too darn short for me. Sometimes I have found the mens range will work for me but this time too many of the tee designs I liked had one pocket and I was not a fan of that. The sleeve length was also not the longest I have seen.

mr1991

One night after a Chinese dinner at Greenwell Point, we were sitting in the club listening to music and The Other Half was browsing Ali Express, as he sometimes does. He found these utterly gorgeous t-shirts which I am very tempted to order a couple of just to see what they are like – despite the apparent shortness of the sleeves. And at those prices, how could you go wrong? They have some incredible hoodies, too.

zandkoze

This is something I found browsing Ali Express. If I could find something like this in a shop where I could try it on and then buy it, that would be perfect. If you see it or something like it in your travels, let me know. :)

A Beach Walk

bw1

Recently I have put myself through a “30 day bootcamp” of sorts. Generally this meant getting out to run and walk as many days as I could. On the first Monday after my bootcamp, I did my usual 5km run/walk, then decided I would “reward” myself with a barefoot beach walk for my remaining 5km.

bw2

Remind me never to reward myself with a barefoot beach walk again! I discovered exactly why I like walking the path next to the beach and not on it. There are a few reasons.

bw3

1. Sand. 2. Water. 3. Sandflies. 4. Sea Lice.

bw8

5. Dead Fish. 6. Jellyfish. 7. Unrecognizable Objects Washed Up On The Beach. 8. Sand.

bw5

Did you notice how I mentioned sand twice there? Sand is really hard to walk on! It slowed me down significantly. My time for this 10km was more like my time for a 15km walk. I was on that beach for an hour and a half, using muscles which apparently do not get used in my regular workouts, the way they screamed at me.

bw6

I do enjoy the occasional sea shell, I do like the occasional wave washing over my feet, I do enjoy the scenery.

bw7

But I think barefoot beach walks should be limited to around 2km, preferably on beaches which have a shower or some kind of tap arrangement where I can wash the sand off my feet.

bw4

I will wait till my next 30 day bootcamp is over, before I “reward” myself with a beach walk again!

Speaking of rewards, I finally made it to my goal weight. I had some ideas of things I wanted to do once I saw that number on the scale – horse riding – indoor sky diving – some kind of adventure course. I may do all three. We will see! ;)

Dark Time

foo

On two recent nights, terrible indignities have been occuring to our chickens. Thursday night last week they were dusted with powder that prevents nasties like lice and mites.

One who does not own chickens might be curious about this process. First up you want to wait for the girls to put themselves to bed. That process begins around twilight and can take up to an hour or more to be completed. Especially when you have new girls who are still working out their place in the flock.

There are two times of day when you will notice who sits where in the scheme of things. Feeding time, where the “lower” girls will be pecked away from the “good food” by the higher girls. It is not usually actual pecks, just acting like they are about to peck is enough to send a lower girl running away. This time of day is easy to document with photos and video.

The other time of day is bedtime. Lesser girls will be told in no uncertain terms to get off the roost of the higher girls. The girls have three roosts to choose from. At present we have two roosts in use – one inside the coop where the higher girls sleep – one in the run where the lesser girls sleep.

darktime1

Apologies – I will not use flash at night if chicken eyes are aimed at me. So this is a dark time photo!

Once the girls have found their spot, they settle in and sleep. They usually remain asleep until about an hour before sunrise, at which time they start to wake up. Some early birds will be up and about, looking for food, water and early morning bugs to eat.

That is, unless they receive a surprise visit from two crazy lunatics who shake dust onto their feathers. In that instance there is much squawking and outraged clucking, some reshuffling of half asleep hens, and all the girls placed onto the internal roost inside the coop just so we know who has been dusted and who has not. I do not have photos for you of the dusting – that is a time when you need your wits about you and you can’t be trying to take photos.

darktime1a

On Saturday night there was another surprise visit – this time to do some feather trimming. The new girls have been here with us for two weeks now and it was time to allow some free ranging. These girls can really fly and BeeGee, Queen and Diana are more flighty than our usual chicken so we wanted to make sure they would not take off over the fence into parts unknown.

We did not bother with wing trimming our older girls – they have been living here for a long time and also are less athletic than some of our newbies.

darktime2

On Sunday, the chicken enclosure door was placed in the open position, and we collectively held our breath hoping all would go well. AKA the girls would find their way back to the coop at the end of the day. Because Queen and Diana have been having a little trouble with that even inside the enclosure, often ending up on top of the coop rather than in it.

darktime3

The girls had a grand time wandering about and exploring new areas they had been gazing at longingly since arriving. The grass was a big hit and much enjoyed, but the garden beds were also a source of happiness. They also found the secret dust bathing area where the cats can watch them from inside the house.

darktime5

While the girls wandered, The Other Half got to work on building them a new way into the coop. He took apart an old fence we had lying around, and created something pretty awesome out of it – they now have an impressive ramp and they are enjoying it a lot. There are times when standing at the top is The Place To Be.

Day Out Saturday

dayout

We were out super early on Saturday with many items on our to-do list.

First up was to pick up our large pet carrier from our friend who had borrowed it. Said friend lives right around the corner from destination two, which was a wood yard. We ordered just over a thousand dollars worth of wood in order to build our next project, which is the pergola beginnings of our Queensland Room.

For those not from Australia, a Queensland Room is essentially a screened in porch. Usually the screen is mosquito net or shade cloth.

dayout4

The next stop was Shellharbour shopping centre. We picked up 15kg of potatoes which will last us about a month and a half. These potatoes are far cheaper than buying potatoes locally. This is just one bag of the three bags, having been sorted into large potatoes for chips and smaller potatoes for other things.

dayout1

We then headed up the 9 into the Southern Highlands. The 9 is probably the best of the roads that go from the South Coast to the Southern Highlands. There is a small section which is bendy but after that it straightens out beautifully. It has the fewest potholes and lumps and bumps.

dayout2

Our next destination was Heatherbrae Pies and a cup of that great Chai Latte for me. All the while, we were listening to songs and crossing some of them off our list.

dayout3

I also enjoyed the cherry and apple pie. I did mean to bring it home and save it for Monday night when I would have warmed it in the oven but I realised that it would have to travel all that way back without any pastry companions to place in the cooler bag.

We returned via Kangaroo Valley, a quick stop at Bunnings to get some needed bits and pieces, then home. Not for long though. There was a twilight market on at Huskisson so we headed out for an afternoon 6km walk and a quick market stop.

dayout5

Then it was home again to discover that the chicken ladder had lost a rung. A quick and dirty solution was made though I am not allowed to show it to you, as The Other Half says it is not his best work. Plus it was built in the dark while we were trimming the new girls feathers in preparation for The First Free Range Day. That day is a story for another post.
